taped and trimmed

Tonight I finished trimming the tape on the left panel banner. The tape is necessary to mask the banner when I apply charcoal dust to the ground. Tomorrow I'll work on the right panel. I've still got to sand the gesso, then project and mask the small, end piece of the banner. Once I get that done, it will be time to put the left banner on the floor of the studio so I can apply the charcoal dust.

this is looking wonderful - and exactly on time for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin (August 15), the icon of your original inspirational banderole. Do I understand correctly that the charcoal is applied to the whole background on which the verse is waving?

Hi Judith! It's good to hear from you again. Thank you. Yes, the background is charcoaled. Typically I throw the charcoal dust and manipulate it in various ways. As this is the first time I've done this on gessoed canvas, and gesso takes the charcoal dusst differently than paper, my usual surface, I'm going to experiment on another canvas first. The reason for the mask on the banner is to keep it pristine; I'll go into the banner after the ground is done, and make the shadows.
